Part-time Generalist Tutor – TRiO Program Student Support Services

This job pays $10.00 an hour and 20-25 hours per week.  

Tutor will be available to tutees, to work with them in-person or virtually. The candidate will also be required to work some office hours in the computer lab to assist walk-in students. 

TRIO is a federal grant project funded by the Department of Education to assist low income and first-generation students to persist and graduate college.  The program serves 140 students on the Southcentral Kentucky campus.

Benefits of Student Support Services

Student Support Services students make higher grades, stay in college longer, and graduate at higher rates than other students.  Student Support Services students receive intensive advising and counseling, free tutoring in subjects where they need help, information about financial aid, help with transferring to and graduating from four-year colleges, and other assistance designed for success in college.

The basic required skills for project tutors are as follows:  

  • A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in his/her major area of study
  • At least 15 earned hours of college credit
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Genuine concern for his/her assigned tutees.
  • Ability to meet with assigned tutees regularly weekly or bi-weekly
  • Dedicated to meeting agreed upon goals

Tutors will be carefully selected from candidates familiar with general education courses and have demonstrated proficiency** in the area in which they desire to tutor.  Ability to tutor STEM courses preferred and particularly Anatomy and Physiology.

Tutors are required to furnish a cover letter that supports their ability to teach and work with students, go through a personal interview and general orientation prior to employment by the project. Additional tutor training is mandatory and scheduled at least once over the course of the academic year.

** Proficiency means that the tutor has taken the course at an accredited college or community college and received an A or B.

Specific courses of interest are  BIOLOGY, specifically ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, ECONOMICS, ENGLISH, ACCOUNTING, PSYCHOLOGY, COLLEGE ALGEBRA AND HIGHER, and GENERAL EDUCATION courses.
