The Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) provides leadership in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of diversity, equity, and inclusion programming and services for the college and brings an essential perspective to related policy initiatives. Supported by a college-wide committee that helps develop a holistic framework and comprehensive strategic plan for diversity, equity, and inclusion, the CDO works collaboratively with other college administrators to advance commitment to equity and inclusion, and serves as both leader and consultant in the effort to recruit and retain both employees and students of varied backgrounds and interests. This position reports to the President.

General Administrative

  1. Provides leadership to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives consistent with the mission of the college and the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and in cooperation with college senior administrators.
  2. Collaborates with the president and other college leadership in planning overall diversity, equity and inclusion operations and initiatives.
  3. Establishes a system to sustain relevant diversity-related training for faculty, staff, and students while leading and supporting training, education and awareness initiatives focused on diversity, equity, inclusion, and multiculturalism, including BCTC’s Cultural Competency Certification Program.
  4. Participates in establishing and monitoring performance assessment on strategic goals to support the college strategic plan.
  5. Guides strategic and annual planning and goal setting activities for the functional area based on the college strategic plan and focuses on helping to ensure that diversity issues are an integral aspect of all institutional initiatives and strategic planning.
  6. Works collaboratively with IPRE to support accountability and institutional effectiveness by developing, implementing, and assessing effective processes and procedures that foster student success.
  7. Develops and monitors an annual budget related to the goals and operational needs of the unit.
  8. Promotes communications providing information on college and community DEI issues and reporting information to the college leadership.
  9. Assists in the development of grant proposals and other fund-raising initiatives.
  10. Participates in college and system organizational development activities including service on college or system committees or involvement in other initiatives as assigned.
  11. Builds and maintains strong community relationships with elected officials, agencies, organizations, institutions, media, and community groups, representing the college in community.  
  12. Complies with college and KCTCS policies and procedures including preparing required reports, plans, proposals, and projections and ensures compliance among staff advising as needed.
  13. Serves as a member of campus crisis management teams and as an active participant when dealing with emergency situations.
  14. Serve as Student Title IX Officer.
  15. Assumes other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the president/CEO.

 

Functional Area

  1. Develops procedures and policies to ensure delivery of quality services and programming in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  2. Creates, maintains, and monitors progress towards diversity goals.  Develops and identifies instruments, including valid and reliable surveys, for ongoing assessment of diversity issues, in collaboration with college and external resources.
  3. Develops and implements the Diversity Plan Report for BCTC, plans strategies to assess effectiveness and set goals for improvement in collaboration with college leadership.
  4. Works in collaboration with student access and success units and strategic communications to enhance recruitment efforts for prospective students from the burgeoning populations to higher education.
  5. Works with student service leaders to develop programs and strategies for enriching the educational experiences of students.
  6. Consults with faculty to enhance their capacity for addressing diversity issues in the classroom.
  7. Works with administrators, faculty, staff, and appropriate committees to effect qualitative and quantitative enhancements in the campus culture around diversity, equity, and inclusion. 
  8. Works with Human Resources to assist in the recruitment of a diverse workforce at all levels within the college including advertising, networking, and recruitment outreach activities.
  9. Functions as subject matter expert on institutional diversity, equity, and inclusion policies related to all aspects of governance and administration, including crisis management and discrimination complaints.
  10. Provides appropriate annual reporting highlighting activities and outcomes in support of faculty, staff, and student diversity.
  11. Other duties as assigned by the President.

Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Master's degree (Student Affairs, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field) and three years of related experience, or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Training and experience leading equity, diversity, and inclusion programming.
  • Excellent command and demonstrated understanding of contemporary diversity, equity, inclusion, and multiculturalism concepts and issues in higher education.
  • Commitment to providing the highest level of customer service and responsiveness to support students with various needs.
  • Ability to display diplomacy and tact in all communication.
  • Proficiency to manage a variety of projects with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, to manage the process and people side of change, and to influence results with emotional intelligence.
  • Outstanding organizational skills, excellent judgment, and a high level of self-motivation and accountability.
  • Adept at collaborating with others and in developing professional alliances.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and willingness to contribute to the advancement and achievement of the College mission.
