Job Summary
The Marketing and Communications Specialist II supports Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College's mission through strategic storytelling, digital communications, public relations, social media management, and content development. This position is responsible for creating and distributing engaging content that promotes student success, academic programs, workforce training opportunities, community partnerships, and institutional initiatives.
This position serves all six Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College campuses—Cumberland, Harlan, Knox, Middlesboro, Pineville, and Whitesburg. The individual selected for this role will collaborate with SKCTC leadership to identify a primary (home) campus; however, travel to other campuses is required. The designated home campus may be reassessed and adjusted in the future as institutional needs evolve.
Job Duties:
Content Development and Storytelling
• Research, write, edit, and distribute news releases, feature stories, student success stories, alumni profiles, and other content for internal and external audiences.
• Develop compelling stories that highlight student achievement, workforce development, academic excellence, community partnerships, and institutional impact.
• Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners to gather content for marketing and public relations efforts.
• Assist in developing content that supports enrollment, retention, fundraising, workforce development, and community engagement initiatives.
Social Media and Digital Communications
• Manage and maintain the college's social media platforms through content creation, scheduling, monitoring, and audience engagement.
• Develop social media campaigns that support enrollment, events, academic programs, workforce initiatives, and institutional priorities.
• Create graphics, photography, video, and written content optimized for digital platforms.
• Monitor social media trends and recommend strategies to increase audience engagement and reach.
Website and Digital Content Management
• Maintain and update website content to ensure accuracy, consistency, accessibility, and alignment with institutional branding.
• Create and update landing pages, event pages, program information, and other digital content.
• Collaborate with departments across the college to ensure timely and accurate online communications.
• Support search engine optimization (SEO) and digital marketing initiatives.
Public Relations and Media Relations
• Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, public announcements, and executive communications.
• Assist with media inquiries and coordinate media coverage of college events and initiatives.
• Develop relationships with local and regional media outlets.
• Support crisis communication and emergency messaging efforts as needed.
Photography, Video, and Multimedia Production
• Capture and edit photography and video content for use in marketing, recruitment, advancement, workforce, and public relations initiatives.
• Produce short-form video content for social media, digital advertising, and website use.
• Maintain an organized digital asset library of photographs, videos, and creative content.
• Assist with livestreaming and multimedia event coverage.
Graphic Design and Marketing Materials
• Design and produce brochures, flyers, advertisements, event materials, digital graphics, presentations, and promotional materials.
• Ensure all materials adhere to KCTCS and Southeast branding standards.
• Coordinate production and distribution of print and digital marketing materials.
• Assist departments in developing effective marketing collateral that supports institutional goals.
Event Promotion and Community Engagement
• Promote college events, workforce training opportunities, student activities, advancement initiatives, and community outreach efforts.
• Support recruitment and enrollment events through marketing and communications efforts.
• Represent the college at community events, programs, and promotional activities as assigned.
• Assist in documenting and promoting community partnerships and college impact stories.
Analytics and Reporting
• Monitor and analyze social media, website, email marketing, and digital campaign performance.
• Prepare reports and recommendations to improve communications effectiveness.
• Utilize data and analytics to inform content development and audience engagement strategies.
• Maintain current knowledge of marketing, communications, social media, and higher education trends.
• Serve on institutional committees and workgroups as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and goals of the college.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Digital Media, Graphic Design, English, or a related field.
• Two (2) years of professional experience in marketing, communications, public relations, journalism, digital media, or a related field.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience creating content for digital and social media platforms.
• Experience with photography, graphic design, and multimedia content creation.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in higher education, workforce development, nonprofit, or public-sector communications.
• Experience with content management systems, email marketing platforms, and social media management tools.
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or similar design software.
• Experience with video editing and production.
• Knowledge of website analytics and digital marketing best practices.
