Job Summary

BCTC has several Student Learning Communities (SLCs), including career and population specific Pathway Cohorts, course specific cohorts, Success Academies, and more. Student Learning Community (SLC) Peer Guides are experienced BCTC students who will connect SLC students to college resources and develop meaningful peer connections with SLC participants by providing frequent encouragement, outreach, and support. The peer-to-peer interactions between SLC Peer Guides and SLC students will set the foundation for students to increase academic success, college connectedness, and program completion. SLC Peer Guides are expected to collaborate with the SLC Success Coach, the Student Success & Retention Area, and faculty associated with the specific SLC, in the planning, promotion, and facilitation of SLC activities. SLC Peer Guides will spend most of their time working with and helping other students.

Peer guides will serve under the Student Success & Retention area but will often work directly with the faculty leads for chosen or assigned student cohorts. Peer guide responsibilities and time commitments may vary based on the specific assigned Student Learning Community (SLC). Training related to technologies, especially Starfish, and BCTC academic and student services will be provided as needed. Students interested in gaining leadership experience are highly encouraged to apply.

Job Duties:

• SLC Peer Guide
o Attend SLC Peer Guide orientation and trainings
o Connect students with BCTC academic and student services and resources
o Maintain accurate records of event and meeting attendance and outreach efforts
o Maintain regular contact with students to provide encouragement, outreach, and support
o Promote SLC Activities, especially with Freshman Orientation & Enrollment Events
o Schedule and attend regular on-campus meetings with assigned students
o Work closely with SLC Success Coach and faculty associated with designated student groups
• SLC Activity Specific Responsibilities, which may include:
o Attending related weekly common hours or events
o Completing CRLA certification
o Monitoring Starfish and providing direct follow-up with students as needed for assigned students
• Employee Responsibilities
o Complete KCTCS/BCTC required trainings
o Complete timesheets and other documentation as required
o Conduct self in professional manner as a BCTC representative
o Maintain privacy and confidentiality (FERPA)
• Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

KCTCS Minimum Education/Experience Requirements:
• Current BCTC student
• Successful completion of at least 12 credit hours at BCTC
• Minimum 2.7 GPA and in good academic standing
• Willing to be highly involved on campus

Preferred Qualifications:

• Success completion of minimum 30 credit hours at BCTC
• Minimum 3.2 GPA
• Highly personable with excellent communication skills
