To perform interpreting duties as needed for BCTC Deaf/Hard of Hearing student population. Deaf/Hard of Hearing students may require an interpreter during classroom lectures or exams, during campus events and functions, or in academic meetings. This is a part time position that coincides with student schedules.
Job Duties:
• Provides in-class interpretation and transliteration services using sign language communication for deaf and hard of hearing students in college classes and/or laboratories which may require presentation and exchange of highly complex and technical information. Assesses student needs and the interpreting situation before and during assignments and makes adjustments as needed. • Interprets Deaf and hard of hearing students’ contributions, reports, or discussions to the instructor and to the class; and interprets d/Deaf and hard of hearing students’ questions directed to the instructor. • When requested, interprets for campus events, extracurricular activities, advising appointments, counseling sessions, etc. both in-person and virtually. • Assists with providing for the deaf and hard of hearing student’s communication needs, including assessing and adjusting lighting, seating arrangements and access to visual aids. • Preps for classes by reading and becoming familiar with technical vocabulary and content. • Stays abreast of new developments and techniques in the interpretation field by attending workshops and conferences and reviewing current literature, legislation and technology. • Adheres to the RID Code of Professional Conduct. • Completes annual KCTCS compliance training. • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree (Required) • National Interpreter Certification (RID CI/CT, CI, CT, NAD IV, NAD V or NIC, NIC- Advanced, NIC-master, CASLI). • Must complete 20 hours of professional development to maintain State Licensure/National Interpreter Certification. • Current license granted by the KY Board of Interpreters for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in accordance with KAR 39:030, Section 3. - proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL/PSE). - proficiency in English and PSE (pidgin signed language). - proficiency in different modes of signing. - compliance with the interpreter’s code of professional conduct (RID-CPC).
