Job Summary
The Professional Academic Advisor offers comprehensive academic advising, guidance, resources, and support to both new and continuing students, helping them navigate their academic and career paths. This role involves close collaboration with students, faculty, and campus resources to promote student success.
Job Duties:
- Responsible for providing comprehensive academic advising services to new, transfer, and first-semester students. This includes supporting students in exploring and refining their academic and career objectives through personalized guidance and resources, while also identifying and addressing non-academic barriers to promote student success.
- Assist in onboarding transfer students by understanding their goals, reviewing available resources, and aiding in course selection to facilitate their integration into the college community.
- Address academic inquiries, adhering to policies, and serve as a resource for returning stop-out students, furnishing them with detailed information on educational options, requirements, and resources to enhance retention efforts.
- Engage in professional development activities to enhance advising skills and remain current in the field, including academic advising, transfer, and credit for prior learning, as designated by the Director.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and accuracy in student record-keeping, adhere to FERPA, while also developing personalized advising plans tailored to individual student needs in both physical and digital formats.
- Engage level III team members, in the absence of the Director, for support. Serve as a liaison for Academic Dean and Faculty as designated by the director.
- Cultivate collaborative relationships with faculty, student support programs, and college offices through clear and efficient communication.
- Expected to exhibit professional behavior with diverse populations and provide exceptional customer service, aiding students in problem resolution and demonstrating sound judgment under pressure.
- Additional duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 1-3 years experience
- Ability to guide students through academic planning and institutional processes while helping them understand requirements, policies, and next steps toward their educational goals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate complex academic information clearly and professionally to students, faculty, staff, and external partners.
- Commitment to supporting student success through proactive guidance, clear communication, and timely follow-up.
- Ability to support students through multiple advising formats, including individual appointments, group sessions, and outreach initiatives designed to promote student progression and success.
- Maintain accurate advising notes and documentation in institutional systems using established procedures.
- Detail-oriented, self-motivated, ability to work independently and adapt seamlessly to fast-paced, dynamic environments.
- Skilled in engaging and supporting students from different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities effectively and meet tight deadlines.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Forms, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Word)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree or equivalent and 3-4 years experience
- Experience in student-facing roles in higher education, preferably a community college environment.
- Experience assisting students with academic planning, program exploration, or transfer pathways.
- Familiarity with student information systems and advising technologies (e.g., PeopleSoft, CRM systems, appointment scheduling platforms).
- Previous experience in a community college setting
