Job Summary

Gateway Community & Technical College invites applications for a Biology Instructor. This full-time faculty position will work collaboratively with students, fellow faculty, and staff to ensure the educational needs of the individual learner are met. They will work to empower students to be fully engaged in the learning environment promoting growth and educational development and will provide leadership to support the operation and success of the general education courses in the division. This position focuses primarily on the teaching of introductory biology courses. The qualified individual must be flexible in teaching daytime and evening on any/all campuses and through various delivery methodologies.

Job Duties:

  • Uses learner-centered pedagogical strategies to engage a diverse population of learners.
  • Develops written syllabi/course outlines and course material.
  • Uses both formative and summative assessments to monitor students’ academic achievements.
  • Prepares and grades assignments, quizzes, and exams.
  • Sets up and maintains safe laboratory experiences in accordance with regulatory procedures and policies.
  • Works with the Dean of Arts & Sciences and support staff to order supplies within the allocated budget.
  • Consistently promotes a positive work and learning environment through words and actions.
  • Remains current with new developments and research in their field and in teaching and learning by collaborating with peers and attending seminars, conferences, and/or workshops.
  • Maintains office hours to provide quality academic advising and assistance to students.
  • Engages in the academic life of the college by participating in community and campus committees and projects.
  • Mentors part-time biology faculty.
  • Teaches assigned schedule, which may include various times, days, campuses, and delivery modalities and fulfills assigned role(s) for course management.
  • Promotes the transferability of GCTC’s general education coursework to public four-year institutions through collaborative partnerships.
  • Actively participates and works within the state and local biology curriculum committee guidelines to ensure that the quality of the program is maintained at the highest level.
  • Works with faculty and dean to provide requested reports and other information as needed to meet the mission of both the Division of Arts and Sciences and the college.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent organizational skills; high attention to detail; independent; self-motivated; able to work in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to communicate with many individuals at all levels throughout the internal college environment and external business and community partners, representing himself/herself professionally and courteously.
  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and, in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under deadlines, and prioritize projects to meet deadlines with high levels of efficiency and accuracy.
  • Must have proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Forms, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and Word).
     

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences and at least two years of relevant teaching experience.
  • Experience in and understanding of working with students from diverse populations is preferred.
  • Experience working at the community college level is preferred.
