Job Summary
BCTC is seeking a dependable and self-motivated Part-Time Greenhouse Technician to support operations in a teaching and production greenhouse focused on aquaponics, hydroponics, and sustainable agriculture systems.
This position supports routine greenhouse operations, assists with the installation and expansion of aquaculture systems, and helps maintain safe and effective use of the greenhouse during instructional activities. The technician will also interact with students, student workers, and members of the general public who visit or participate in greenhouse-related programs. This role requires the ability to work semi-independently after training and to communicate clearly with the program supervisor. Work is performed primarily in a greenhouse environment, with exposure to varying temperatures and humidity conditions.
Note: Position includes weekends
Job Duties:
• Assist with routine greenhouse operations including planting, harvesting, pruning, trellising, and general plant care
• Provide support for the installation and setup of aquaculture and aquaponics systems within the greenhouse under supervisor guidance
• Assist with system startup activities such as equipment setup, visual inspections, basic monitoring, and reporting of issues
• Perform routine aquaculture support tasks including fish feeding and system checks (e.g., pumps, filters, water levels)
• Conduct basic water quality monitoring and recordkeeping as directed (training provided)
• Assist with and support students, student workers, and class/lab activities within the greenhouse by providing guidance on routine tasks and maintaining a safe working environment
• Interact professionally with visiting groups and members of the general public, providing basic information about greenhouse operations as appropriate
• Maintain cleanliness, organization, and safe working conditions in greenhouse and aquaculture areas
• Assist with routine upkeep of greenhouse and aquaculture equipment and supplies
• Identify and report plant health, system, or facility concerns to the supervisor in a timely manner
• Follow established safety, operational, and instructional support procedures
• Use basic hand tools and greenhouse equipment in accordance with safety guidelines.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Access to reliable transportation
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in varying temperature and humidity conditions, including greenhouse environments
• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and perform repetitive movements for extended periods of time
Preferred Qualifications:
• Coursework or experience in agriculture, biology, environmental science, or sustainability
• Previous experience in a greenhouse, farm, garden, or aquaculture setting
• Experience working with students or the public in an educational or operational setting
• Interest in sustainable food systems or controlled-environment agriculture
• Current community college students encouraged to apply
